Either I have been watching too many episodes of Pawn Stars and been talking to too many price conscious shoppers or...
Recent events and the downturn in the economy have cause what I call: "The new barter mentality".
Consumers are asking around with the belief that they can talk their way into better prices. They are correct!
Here's why:
1. Businesses have a list price that they hope customers will purchase, however when asked about this being the best rate, businesses bust out their: coupons, sales racks, and promo codes!
2. People are paying more attention to prices, in order to shop around and save some money.
AND 3. More stores are smartly using a "pay what you feel" model which includes service tips, taxes, and fees. Also, there is a negotiated rate that is more common practice when shopping both window prices and off of your neighbors' craigslist.com treasures.
